New Year, new resolutions? I’ve been enjoying reading Nehemiah over Christmas, so here are some Nehemiah-inspired thoughts at the start of the New Year!
Build something. Get engaged with building something of substance, build it with those you love, be united in that common vision and build with zeal.
Rebuilding Jerusalem’s wall accommodated all capacities; some re-built large sections, others managed to rebuild the wall outside their house. All building mattered. Only the nobles are recorded for not joining in at all. Mmmm.
Nehemiah resolutely stands against all threats & intimidation during the re-build, faced with death threats he has the opportunity to hide, he says, “I am not that man”. He will not wimp out, he stays so focused, he and the team even remain clothed night & day.
During the Christmas break we hired the new Batman film, Dark Knight Rises. It starts with Batman at a low ebb, retreated and misunderstood in the thankless task as Gotham’s superhero. He’s lost his self-belief. Still got the cloak, the mask & the gizmos but gets thrashed by the “Baddieâ€; the one with the unfortunate mouth brace from an over-eager orthodontist. Batman has to regain his self-belief, to focus once again on his essential purpose, in order to succeed. Great film. (I want that impossible bike Anne Hathaway gets to ride; maybe next Christmas…).
Parallel Bruce Wayne & Nehemiah. Both motivated to save their city. Batman fuelled by anger, becomes relentless in pursuit of his goal. Nehemiah fuelled by passion for God’s plan continues until the job is complete to every last hinge and bolt. Both relentless in the face of all obstacles; both walk in determined self-belief because of a higher purpose.
New Year thoughts; The people were at their best when building, once in maintenance mode, and in Nehemiah’s absence they begin to slide back from their convictions of a New Day. Leadership is so essential to keep the pace. Let’s keep building and not simply maintaining what has been built already. In our various capacities, let us continue to move on in relentless passion with a focus on impacting our towns & cities.
In 2013 let’s continue to build on well-laid foundations with a long-term purpose. Have confidence in our calling, conviction in the task, never giving up, and see the higher goal.
Build something. Build something of substance, build with those you love.
