I moved to Southampton in May 1982 on a 6 month work placement. I was given a 3 bedroomed flat above the shop that I was managing. It was in this flat that I encountered God and had my whole life turned upside down. I was brought up in a Christian environment but my experience of God was all second hand. Within a week of moving to Southampton I had been baptised in the Holy Spirit and received a clear call from God to the city. As I stood looking out of my flat window I began to weep for the groups of young people milling around on the street. As tears rolled down my face the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, ‘I have called you to be an apostle to the young people of this city’. Today I walked past the shop where I used to work and was reminded of the call of God on my life over 30 years ago. As Paul said in Acts 26, ‘I have not been disobedient to that heavenly vision’. For me, it was a timely reminder that when calls he equips with all that we need to fulfil that call. Whatever I may need – vision, faith, resources, confidence, perseverance – it is all available to me. Phew!
